Man’s Search for Meaning

“Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of human freedoms -to chose one’s own attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.”

Victor Frankl

Man’s Search for Meaning is a powerful read,

Regardless of your position, race, religion, or creed!

Victor Frankl survived the Holocaust with such humanity –

And his ability to avoid despair really spoke to me!

In the midst of profound suffering, he was able to find a way

To focus on sharing and helping others to get through each day.

Although he was a prisoner and had no freedom to leave,

The Nazis could not stifle his will to achieve.

I can’t even imagine what it was like to be there –

But, he didn’t seem to dwell on life not being fair.

Instead he found a vital reason to BE –

He would devote his life to helping others less fortunate than he.

That’s how he managed to get through those years,

Doing his best, however limited – not being frozen by fears.

He couldn’t alter Hitler’s course – of course this is true –

But, he sure rocked the world of those he knew!

And Man’s Search for Meaning has had an impact so great –

On the many thousands worldwide who have read it to date!

Whenever I look at my situation, and get the urge to complain –

Conjuring up Victor Frankl causes me to think again!

Like him, many came out of the concentration camps barely alive,

But their souls were intact, and they were ready to thrive.

These amazing people were able to find a way

To find meaning in their lives – day after daunting day!

Survivors of serious trauma and illness as well –

Often have similar stories they are likely to tell…

The misfortune they suffered, they often say –

Is what makes them able to have the best lives today!

“Rock bottom” sometimes seems to be the building foundation we need –

But, is that a belief we should continue to feed?

How low do we need to go before we get to decide –

That we are the ones in charge of this ride?

Instead, I challenge every one of us to start right now –

Choose to find positive meaning daily – and just start focusing on HOW!
